Chant Meditation

Chant Meditation is a form of meditating very similar to mantra meditation. Both forms of meditation are about making the mind one-pointed through the repetition of a sound vibration. What happens when you repeat these chants is that your mind starts to become absorbed by the sound-vibration of your chant or mantra. In the beginning we repeat the chant verbally, physically, but then once our clarity increases we can repeat the mantra only mentally without the use of any physical sound vibration.

In the beginning the mind will run everywhere but very soon: it will start to exclude all other thought-forms from its awareness and only the chant remains. This process will lift your consciousness to a higher level and will train the mind to become more focussed and one-pointed in life. This process will clean out alot of the dualities and distortions present within the mind and its connection to the senses.

Basically what you do is you go and take place as you would do for any kind of meditation technique. Once you are comfortable you can choose to take:

  • One of the free meditation chants below
  • Find some mantras on your own
  • Take one of the powerful Kundalini Yoga Mantras

Free Meditation Chants:

You can pick one of these free meditation chants to start your practice with. They are each of them very effective in eliminating mental and bodily impurities while building up mental power and strength at the same time; bringing about transcendental states:

The universal "Om" or "Aum" Chant:

"Ooommmmmmm"

or:

"Aummmmmmmm"

Info: This is probably the most populair and frequently used chant meditation in the world. It brings about a state of silence, after sufficient practice that is. It brings about peace and tranquillity and the individual letters A-U-M represent a specific process of going and pirecing through the levels of the mind. The emphasis should be on the final process of "MMMM" and on the silence that follows.

First there is the Gross: "A"
Then follows the Subtle: "U"
Then follows the Causal: "M"
After which the silence of infinity arises as the silence beyond the chant.

The Hare Ram Hare Krishna Mantra:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Info:After practicing this one of the free meditation chants for awhile, there are various results for the one who is repeating the chant. Srila Prabhupada once commented on this mantra in his commentary on the Bhagavad-gita: "We have practical experience that any person who is chanting the holy names of Krishna in course of time feels some transcendental pleasure and very quickly becomes purified of all material contamination."

The Gayatri Mantra:

OM BHUR BHUVAH SVAH

TAT

SAVITUR VARENYAM

BHARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI

DHIYO YONAH

PRACHODAYAT

Translation:

The interpretation as well as the translation from the original language to English makes that there are many different translations of the Gayatri Mantra. All come down to the same essential meaning like the one I chose below:

Translation:

Throughout all levels of existence (Gross, Subtle, Causal)

That (Om) essential nature

illuminating existence is the Infinite One.

May all beings perceive with subtle intellect

the magnificent brilliance of enlightened awareness.

Info: This is one of the most referred to chant meditations besides the Aum Mantra. Where the Aum sound consists of only one syllable, the gayatri Mantra consists of multiple sentences, making it more of a ancient prayer among the practices of chant meditation.

The mantra is stated in the vedas, the most ancient scriptures of man. The meaning of the Gayatri chant explains how there is one underlying existence of Consciousness piercing through and giving birth to all levels of manifested creation (Gross, Subtle, Causal).

This chant meditation aks for grace and wisdom coming from this underlying source. It prays that our higher intellect is capable of perceiving this wisdom so that our minds may become enlightened by the light of that Om.
