Weekly Thought #1: Do Nothing
"Return to Weekly Thoughts Index"
Just do Nothing:
The following exercise is doing nothing. It is a meditation in itself and not the simplest one per se. It needs your fullest attention and it is one of the most valuable meditations out there. When done with proper dedication, it can bring you a lot.
Sit down somewhere and do absolutely nothing. Stare at the wall in front of you or close your eyes, whatever suits you, but do nothing. Can you understand this concept? Don't do anything physically and dont try anything at all mentally either. Don't move the body (if it happens it doesn't matter, let it happen); Don't wish for something; don't desire for something; don't think of something; don't think of this exercise or how you are doing it... Dont think and just Do nothing! Go blank, completely empty, silent, centred. Don't try it, just don't do anything. Forget about the entire outside world, nothing matters, nothing needs to be done or achieved, nothing is to be desired. Just stop, let yourself go and you will fall back into your centre of consicousness, your centre of silence.
When doing absolutely nothing for an extended period of time, peace and tranquility are the result.
Have you ever done nothing before? is it even possible? It is possible yes. Do we do it alot? No. We are conditioned to move, to be active, to move to and from our centre of consciousness but never to stay in it. The nature of the mind is dynamic and our energies are often out of balance so naturally, we are not at ease nor are we capable of becoming at ease at will. Doing absolutely nothing is very hard to understand, because if you try to understand it, that means you are doing something: You are thinking, you are intellectually being busy, trying to understand something. You can only understand it if you Stop, just stop with everything you do and stay in that zone for as long as possible. Don't try it mentally, just be still, do nothing, stop all mental and physical activities and retain that nothingness, retain your blankness. And soon the blankness will turn into the most amazing fulfillment.
First you become empty and after awhile, even though the emptiness remains unchanged, you will be filled with bliss, energy and happiness. It is out of the emptiness that you will overflow.
This is the most immediate approach to the No-Mind Meditation and once you get the hang of it, you can apply it to any moment in any given situation. Of course you can not always keep your physical body still if you have to do something, but if you are really advanced in doing completely nothing, you can use your phsycial body and still do nothing and have no mental activity in the meantime. In the end, all of my practices are meant to be applied to the mind primarily. Master the mind and everything is under your control.
But remember for this week, to regularly stop and do nothing. Every time you remember this assignment, stop thinking about it and do nothing. The tricky part is not to think about it but to just let go of the thought and cease all activity for as long as possible. You will be in a highly alert, conscious state of nothingness. If you retain this state, you will overflow and bliss, absolute silence, and peace will come.

Goodluck!
