Free From Desire

"Return from Free From Desire to Sense Control"

Being free from desire brings you in a most peacefull state filled with bliss through a naturally established here-and-now-awareness. This is what happens once we are masters over the mind. Unfortunately, desires drive our senses mad, constantly looking outward to experience superficial pleasure gained from sense objects. If we want to be free from this constant burden and restlessness we should learn how to either transcend our mind through deep meditation or control our mind through mind controlling exercises.

The first step is to recognize the constant correlation between the mind's desires and the sense-organs. Observe yourself, witness the mind and see how the mind constantly drives you outward to use the senses. Witness how your mind is continuously dis-eased; not at ease.

Try to keep your eye-sight focussed on a specific object while there are other people around you. For example, when you are in a train or bus going somewhere, just decide to not lose that little spot on the ceiling our of your sight. Or that chair accros the walkway. Decide to keep your eyes focussed on that no matter what happens, and see what happens. Your mind will wander, it will desire you to look at other people to see whether or not they are looking at you strangely because you keep staring at one point all the time. As you observe and experience this urge to look away from your chosen area or object, recognize this as a desire and let it go. Just let it go using your will to continue to look at that one spot untill you reach the station of your destination. You can try this in all kinds of circumstances.

We are incapable of waiting:
For example, when you are still waiting for the train to come, become aware of how restless you/your mind actually are/is. Are you slowly walking across the station? Are you checking the time-board which displays when the train will come more than once every five minutes? Are you checking your mobile phone for any new messages? Are you urging towards one of those candy machines to grab a bite? Why can you not just keep your body in one place, why do you have to move constantly, why do you have to check your phone and the display board more than once?

Recognize these urges, these desires, these mental processes and that discontentment with your current situation. Why can't you just wait and let waiting be what you are doing? I have met hardly anyone who can just wait. We say we are waiting, but we are not waiting, we are constantly fleeing from waiting. We are incapable of waiting. Recognize this behaviour, this tendency towards outer distractions to keep the mind busy and try to centre the mind and just wait and let pure waiting be what you are doing. Be free from desire.

If you manage to let go of these desires to look outward; to use the senses or to change their current situation, a natural yet blissful peace will come over you. A feeling of having gained a bit of mastery over your mind, over your senses, over your being. You will feel more in control of your life and it feels great. This satisfaction is more genuine and it lasts much longer than the taste of a piece of applepie or the sight of someone looking at you.

Ultimately you will leave behind your attachments to every desire and there will be total peace shining through every layer of your being. This is the state of being free from desire. There are many techniques to control the mind to this very point and there are many techniques to transcend the mind so you won't need to focus on controlling it, rather, you try to overcome it's grip completely, without dealing with the mind itself so much. The key prior to both transcending the mind as well as controlling it, is to learn how to witness the mind.

If you are looking for methods to control the mind you should look under Mind Control and Sense Control. If you are looking for ways to transcend the mind, or to stop its activity entirely and becoming free from desire this way, I will advise you to read the mindless meditations under Meditation Techniques
