Transcendental Meditation is a form of meditation in which the practitioner is often initiated by a master or guru and then receives his or her personal mantra. This form of relatively simple meditation is spread widely across the world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who recently left the body in 2008.
Learning Transcendental Meditation
Learning Transcendental Meditation involves little effort. One simply takes the time to sit 20 minutes a day, preferably twice a day, and repeats the mantra given by the master. If you have not received a personal mantra or initiation, you can choose any mantra that resonates with you; that you like. The mantra for this practice should consist of only one, or just a few words. Long mantra's like the Gayatri Mantra are recommended for use in general mantra meditation practice(see Instructions in Effortless Mantra Meditation).
How to practice Transcendental Meditation
Let's say you don't feel the need, or don't have the opportunity and money to be initiated by a master into Transcendental Meditation (TM), does that mean you cannot benefit from this practice? Sure you can. You can learn it for free yourself. You are human and you are the same as every other human being, initiated or not. You might not have had a personal mantra handed down to you by a 'master', but that does not change much. You simple go and search for mantras or interesting, valuable words that hold deeper meaning, and you adopt that as your mantra for as long as you like.
Free Lessons on Transcendental Meditation
For example you take the mantra Aum, or Om, as your free mantra and you intent to use this in your free transcendental practices:- Pick A Mantra
- Sit Down for 20 minutes a day
- Repeat your Mantra verbally
- Slowly soften the volume of your voice
- Until only the mental reverbration and repetition is left
- Don't try too hard to focus
- Just place your attention on the mantra again and again, smoothly
- Allow all sensations to come and go as they are
These free lessons are all you need for Transcendental Meditation. Just repeat these 20 minutes every day, preferably twice a day. Gradually you may elongate these 20 minutes, but it is not necessary. Go with the flow and just place your attention gently on your mantra. If your mind wanders, remind yourself of your mantra again, don't be forceful. Soon you will harvest deeper peace and tranquility in your everyday life as well as better focus and greater clarity of mind.
