Instructions In Effortless Mantra Meditation provides a 5-step 'guide' to begin your practice of mantra meditation. Read the 4 steps and the fifth extra step for those who are getting the hang of this form of meditation, along with the tips that are stated under each step:


  1. Get yourself a Mantra:

  2. How to choose your mantra? There are multiple ways to choose your mantra:
    • Become initiated into Transcendental Meditation by a guru. He will give you your personal mantra.
    • Pick your own by searching the internet and the books, or by buying cd's on famous mantras. See what they stand for and pick the meaning and mantra that resonates with you; that you like best.
    • Use the universal mantra "Om" (Ooooommmm). This mantra is considered to be the most all-round yet deepest mantra available.

  3. Find a suitable place to sit down somewhere:
    Preferably straight up in a chair or as in one of the yoga sitting meditation postures.

  4. Start repeating the mantra physically:

  5. There are two primary ways to meditate on your mantra:
    • One is by actually pronouncing your mantra out loud using your voice and focussing attention on the physical sound.
    • The second method is by repeating the mantra only in your mind.

    • This one is a bit harder and recommended for advanced mantra meditators or after chanting the mantra physically for awhile so the sound still vertebrates through your mind.

  6. Let everything that follows just happen/go/be:

  7. Many things and sensations may occur. Ranging from a tingling sensation in your hand, to a complete transcendance of mind/body consciousness. Let it all just happen, don't force anything, don't try to focus, just listen to your mantra and keep repeating it, let everything else happen on its own. Mantra meditation should be one of the most effortless meditation techniques available so don't force anything, just keep on listening to the repetition of the mantra and everything else will happen on it's own. Be patient and listen without tension. Just follow these instructions in effortless mantra meditation and all will come to you.

  8. Advanced: Hear the mantra in your mind whenever you choose to:

When this meditation technique starts to bring you to that transcendental place or at least at some place you feel centred, blissful, focusses or just comfortable with, start meditating by repeating your mantra your mantra mentally whenever you think of it. You can do it while in public transport, while walking through a budy noisy street, while working with the computer, while doing Hatha yoga or other physical workout. Eventually you can do it whenever you choose to, wherever you are and while whatever you are doing.

When you are getting the hang of this meditation: or meditation in general, you will be able to choose between distraction; what is going on in the external world on one level, and that centred place of focussed awareness inside on another level. You will be able to sense this formless and timeless space underneath everything that is going on. It feels like a omnipresent, all-penetrating, formless field of awareness that can be found within every sound vibration, in every viual perception and in any other sense perception. Normally this field is covered, but by meditating ,as is suggested for example in these instructions in effortless mantra meditation, you will reveal the cloths and you will be able to see it at all times and in any given situation if you choose to.
