Yoga Sutras of Patañjali

Yoga Sutras table of content:

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali are divided into four main chapters:

The 1st chapter is about contemplation:
It provides a fundamental birds-eye-view of the path of Raja Yoga and describes the states of consciousness that follow after sufficient practice.

  1. Yoga Sutras of Patañjali #1.1-1.4
  2. Yoga Sutras of Patañjali #1.5-1.11
  3. Yoga Sutras of Patañjali #1.12-1.16
  4. Yoga Sutras of Patañjali #1.17-1.18 on Samadhi

The 2nd chapter is about the preparatory exercises:
These are the exercises that will form the fundamental ground to keep you from slipping down.

The 3rd chapter is about the siddhi’s:
These are the higher powers that are the result of the extensive practice of the last 3 stages of Yoga.

The 4th chapter is about enlightenment:
This chapter is all about the goal of yoga; the liberation of the individual soul.

I will comment on most of the yoga sutras briefly: It is up to the student to find out and experience the true meaning of the sutras so I will try to suggest as little as possible. However, basic explanation on most of these sutras will be given with the purpose of making the student look into the proper direction, like a compass pointing North. You'll have to find your own destination, but a compass will prevent unnecessary wandering in the 'wrong' places.

Some authors choose to explain these sutras in great detail, others comment as little as possible. The most important part is not the explanation but the sutra itself. Focus on the sutra and what it means to you, focus on that primarily. Then you can go and read the explanation. Keep in mind that these explanations are my own perception.

General Info:

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali are 196 short sentences or aphorisms that define the entire path of Raja Yoga (Royal Yoga). Never before have I seen anyone put so much potential information into so few words.

Each yoga sutra contains a ton of potential info and wisdom depending on your own level of understanding and wisdom. That is why I said that I have never seen anybody put so much potential information into such a little amount of words. Some of these sutras may look meaningless to someone with no understanding of the science and mechanism behind yoga, but even though some may look meaningless, every single one of these sutras is considered to be the perfect representative for that specific part of the yoga philosophy. They function as an outstanding gateway or entry into the experience that is the purpose of Yoga science.

Picture the goal or destination of these sutras as a universal room. There are many doors to this room and each of these doors can lead you to that same room, that same destination. Each yoga sutra at itself is such a door or entry. Most sutras are direct doors to this room, containing fundamental principles while others are more explanative or experimental in nature. Master one of these principle based sutras and you will enter that room through one way, master another such sutra and you will enter that same room through another door. Just keep in mind that eventually all doors lead to the same room, so you are free to choose the path that fits you most in your current level of development.

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali is one of my favourite spiritual documents mainly because of their accurateness and structure. I like the way that these Yoga Sutras approach the subject of Self Realization/enlightenment. They do not attach importance to unnecessary and fluffy 'paranormal' experiences of any kind; they present Yoga Science in a direct and immediate way. No unnecessary side-effects are valued, yet everything of importance is covered. They only present to you the fundamental knowledge you need in order to practice mastering your Self.
